A Survey on Visual Acuity among Primary School Children in Seoul

Abstract
This study was conducted to know the influencing factors to poor visual acuity of school children being in the period of active learning.
One of the private primary school in Seoul was selected as a sample. In this school, visual acuity was examined from third school year during the annual physical examinations of pupils. The health records of 1,171 children from third to sixth grade were reviewed for the analysis of visual acuity.
Visual acuity of parents and siblings¢¥ past history of eye diseases, and T.V. watching conditions were also examined through a structured questionaire.
The findings obtained were summarized:
1. Out of total 1,171 children, 72.2% had 1.0 or above of visual acuity in both eyes. By sex, the proportion was larger among boys than girls.
2. The proportion of children whose one or both eyes visual acuity were 1.0 or lower was 28.9% in everage. There was no remarkable difference between children in each grade of school years.
3. Among 888 children whose visual acuity had been examined in previous year, 8.7% of left eye¢¥s and 10.6% of right eye¢¥s visual acuity were changed worse from 1.0 or higher to lower than 1.0.
These proportions were highest among fifth school year children.
4. The proportion of children with poor visual acuity was larger among those who had parents or siblings with poor visual acuity or wearing glasses. Especially mother¢¥s visual acuity might be more influencial factors.
5. No differences were found in the visual acuity with past history of eye diseases.
6. The proportion of children with poor visual acuity did not change with a definite trend by the average daily length of T.V. watching time. But those were increased steadily with the short distance of watching T.V.
7. Out of 331 children with poor visual acuity, 58.7% become aware of their visual acuity through annual physical examination in school health program.
8. About 13.6% of all choldren or all children or 43.8% of children whose visual acuity was lower than 1.0 were wearing glasses. Majority of children with glasses began to wear it at third or earlier school year.
